Keeping fit for the over 50s in Barnet

There are a number of fun ways to keep fit in the Borough of Barnet. Below are just some suggestions for keeping active….

  • Go to the park – The borough of Barnet has many great parks for a run or walk – there’s a park within one mile of most homes in Barnet.┬áThe Barnet.gov website has marked and measured routes in nine parks – this will allow you to know exactly how far you are exercising. The pre-plotted routes are 1k, 2.5k or 5k suitable for all fitness levels.   • Go to a leisure centre – Barnet has a number of leisure centres that have some great sporting activities. Some of the centres provide courts for football, tennis, table tennis, squash badminton and basketball. Better Health and Fitness Senior memberships are open to anyone aged either over 50, 55 or 60. Pop into your local Better leisure centre to apply for a Better Health and Fitness Senior membership. Not only are the leisure centres a great way to keep you fit and active, they also provide a great opportunity to socialise and make new friends.

 

  • Fun, free and affordable activities – Age UK Barnet have put together a list of affordable options throughout the borough covering Tai Chi yoga, table tennis, dance and seated exercises. The Saracens Foundation have the Learn to Move scheme which is run for the over 50s. Dance, pilates, walking sports and Nordic walking are just some of the activities offered.   • Exercise from home – If getting out of the house is a challenge then take a look at the free exercise plans created by GLL. The plans are to be completed at your own pace, starting with one or two exercises and building as your confidence and fitness increases – download it from here
